Description
Tom Paine, 1792, Greetings Card,
125 x 125 mm, contained in cellophane wrapper with fitted envelope.
There were widespread anti-Tom Paine demonstrations during the period of 1792-93. Struck tokens carried mottoes as “The Wrongs of Man” and “The End of Pain.”
Another expression of this sentiment was to put studs on the soles of boots inscribed T.P.
This token was included in the British Museum Exhibition of 1989- “The Shadow of the Guillotine.”
