Nineteenth-Century Love Token, Engraved on a Cartwheel Penny, circa 1830
Love Tokens are the art of the underclass, first appearing in the mid 18th century. Out of these developed sailor’s farewells and valentines and subsequently the convict love tokens.Known by the prisoners as ” Leaden Hearts” they were produced in prison, the parting gift to their family prior to departing for Australia.
Leaden Hearts produced by women are extremely rare. About ten percent of those transported were women and the proportion of tokens produced by them is much small still. The only known examples given by a woman, are to a father and an aunt.
