Love Tokens are the art of the underclass, first appearing in the mid 18th century. Out of these developed sailor’s farewells and valentines and subsequently the convict love tokens. Known by the prisoners as ” Leaden Hearts” they were produced in prison, the parting gift to their family prior to departing for Australia.
